Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) plans to introduce a new amendment to the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act requiring a number of universities to police and report uses of illegal file sharing on its campuses.

Oxford University has begun fining students whose Facebook profiles contain pictures of "trashings," a flavor of rowdiness that Oxford undergraduates indulge in after final exams. Trashings involve getting covered in eggs and flour by fellow revelers. The fines range from $80 to $200, according to an Associated Press report.

The Texas Tech University System (TTUS) is in the middle of a four-year implementation of a project called ConnecTech, which is designed to integrate information systems within the TTUS enterprise. As part of the program, the university system has adopted various technologies from SunGard Higher Education, a provider of enterprise solutions for higher education.

Astronomers at the University of Portsmouth, Oxford University, and Johns Hopkins University came up with a solution last week that not only alleviated the burden but also generated an enthusiastic response from the public: They opened up the project to volunteers via the Internet.

Answering the prayers of those who like to look at mouse brains, Duke University's Center for In Vivo Microscopy last week posted the results of new advances in magnetic resonance imaging, showing off high-resolution 3D images of mouse brains, including a genetically modified mouse brain.

Lindenwood University in Missouri has partnered with ed tech provider ConnectEdu to deploy Connect!, an online portal system designed for education. The university will use Connect! to help Missouri students and parents prepare for college and to begin accepting electronic applications.

Loyola University Chicago recently revamped its website’s organization and features in an attempt to target and attract prospective students. According to Loyola, 77.8 percent of freshman its applications were received online, and the majority of the current freshman class was chosen from online applicants.
