Looking for a little privacy in your life? If so, you might want to leave that cell phone behind. Research released last week by Northeastern University showed not only how easy it is to track individuals by their cell phone usage, but how easy it is to track massive groups of people as well--all without their consent. The research has drawn the ire of those both inside and outside academia for the act of breaching these individuals' privacy and for the implications for further enabling the surveillance culture. But Northeastern is defending the research, saying that the privacy of those studied was of the utmost concern.

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has launched an unusual collaborative research effort with the corporate world. The Rochester, NY school has entered into an agreement with telecommunications company PAETEC for the first project under RIT's new "Corporate R&D" program, in which faculty and graduate students will conduct research for companies, with the companies themselves retaining intellectual property rights to the research developed.

Microsoft and Aspect Software Inc. this week initiated a global strategic alliance focused on better enhancing communications between contact centers and the broader enterprise. Under the agreement, Chelmsford, Mass.-based Aspect will integrate its contact center software into Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007, a unified communications platform that supports instant messaging, voice over IP (VoIP) and Web conferencing for the enterprise.

- University of Houston To Install IP-based TV in New Residence Hall

The University of Houston announced that it would be installing AT&T U-verse services into student housing on a college campus. The IP-based TV and broadband Internet services will be included in all 700 one- and two-bedroom apartments of a 547,000-square-foot residence hall under construction for graduate and professional students.

The number of computers using mobile broadband technology to access the Internet grew by 154 percent in the 4th quarter of 2007 versus the same period in 2006, according to comScore, a research firm. comScore, which measures online behavior, said the total number of computers going online through mobile broadband technology grew to 2.1 million from 854,000.

- Colorado State Achieves 90% Student Participation in Emergency Notification System

Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO, said that 90 percent of its 25,000 student population has enrolled in its emergency text notification system. The campus implemented the system from Rave Wireless school-wide in September 2007. The program enables CSU to send text messages to subscribers in the event of an emergency.

Thomas Jefferson University, an academic health center in Philadelphia, has deployed a wireless system that includes voice coverage and mobile broadband access. In a statement, Provider AT&T said it is supplying 150 Palm Treos, 30 Blackberry devices, and more than 150 Push to Talk handsets, which operate on the in-building wireless system and AT&T's third-generation (3G) BroadbandConnect network, to physicians and staff members.

Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA said it has begun a transition to voice over IP to accommodate new construction. The university, which has 2,000 students on a 600-acre campus, made the decision when it was faced with a project to move telephone poles and lay new cables to provide telecommunications for new buildings.

The University of Arizona (UA) has completed two major phases of its wireless LAN deployments for voice and data, according to the company managing the project. Today, UA's wireless network--dubbed UAWiFi--spans more than 7 million square feet, 4,500 wireless access points, and 22 buildings. Upon completion, the initiative, which is being managed by systems integrator NEC Unified Solutions and using Cisco equipment, will comprise more than 6,000 access points and 12 million square feet on two campuses.

Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA has upgraded its data network and installed Extreme Networks switches to support video collaboration applications. Additionally, all servers were upgraded to Gigabit speeds. Extreme BlackDiamond 8800 switches support the core of the network, and Summit X450 switches outfit the edge. These switches feature Power over Ethernet (PoE), as well as routing capabilities. PoE enables network devices to run off a single CAT5 Ethernet cable that carries both data and power.

Research and education organization the SANS Institute this week revealed its list of the top menaces facing IT in the coming year. Echoing earlier reports from security watchdog organizations, the group's "Top-10 Cyber Security Menaces for 2008" cited Web 2.0 technologies, converged devices, botnets, and browser addons among the worst, with a heavy emphasis on consumerized technologies and the vulnerabilities they present.
