Technische Universitat Dresden has gone public with its installation of an SGI supercomputer, which is being used by German researchers in the campus' Center for Information Services and High-Performance Computing. TU Dresden installed an SGI Altix 4700 system powered by 2,048 Intel Itanium 2 processors and 6.5 terabytes of main memory.

A computing research organization said that enrollments and degrees at United States-based computer science departments dropped further in 2006 and 2007. The non-profit Computing Research Association, which is composed of academic and private industry members, has done survey work on computer science degrees since 1974, tracking enrollment trends among 170 Ph.D.-granting schools.

Microsoft Wednesday ushered in two highly anticipated betas for developers at its MIX08 conference in Las Vegas: the first public downloads of Internet Explorer 8 and Silverlight 2. The company also released a slew of technology previews, including the Visual Studio 2008 tooling for Silverlight 2, Expression Studio 2 beta (which supports Silverlight 2) and an ASP.NET MVC Preview 2.

The University of Tokyo and Sun Microsystems announced two joint research projects that will focus on high-performance computing and Web-based programming languages. These research projects will be the first international collaboration that comes out of the Proprius21 initiative advocated by U-Tokyo for producing visible results from research collaborations with private enterprises.

Southern Polytechnic State University's School of Computing and Software Engineering will be establishing a game design and development lab, which is expected to open in summer 2008. Coinciding with the completion of the acquisition, Sun also made available MySQL's complete portfolio of products through its global sales and services organization. The company also recently announced several new universities deploying its systems.

The University of Oregon has joined the fast-growing nanotechnology industry with the dedication last week of a new science and technology research complex. The new underground Lorry I. Lokey Laboratories building is a signature research center associated with the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute, a consortium that includes the University of Oregon, Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon State University, Portland State University, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories and the region's high-technology companies.

Adobe this week announced the impending release of Director 11, the first major update to the company's multimedia authoring tool in about four years. The new version expands 3D features with a new physics engine and new DirectX support and also introduces parity between JavaScript and Lingo for scripting. The new version will ship in March for Mac OS X (Intel) and Windows.

In an effort to promote expertise in Web 2.0 application development among the next generation of IT professionals, IBM has teamed up with two universities--University of California, Los Angeles and North Carolina State University--to provide support for academic programs teaching programming using open technologies like Groovy and Java in conjunction with Eclipse and Ruby on Rails. IBM also said it will be providing its previously announced Lotus Mashups software free to the academic community later this year.
