First Look: Komodo IDE 5.0

Last month, ActiveState released Komodo IDE 5.0, the company's latest integrated development environment (IDE). Komodo supports multiple programming and markup languages, including HTML, JavaScript, PHP, Perl, Java, Python, C++ and more. It does not support some .NET languages at present, such as ASP/ASP.NET, C# and VB.NET.

IBM Offers Cloud Computing Help

"Cloud computing" is a much argued term, but it typically refers to solutions delivered over the Internet, rather than via customer premises-installed software.

IE8 Release Candidate Coming on Q1 2009

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 apparently will have its product debut sometime next year, according to an announcement released Wednesday by the company. The Web browser is currently available as IE8 Beta 2, and Microsoft hopes to get some more feedback from the public and technical community before finalizing it.

Microsoft Unveils Exchange and SharePoint as Services

Microsoft exec Stephen Elop on Monday announced two hosted solutions from Microsoft--Exchange Online and SharePoint Online--which are now available to organizations of all sizes in the United States. The software, paid for by annual subscriptions, is hosted on Microsoft's servers and supported by Microsoft's channel partners.

Software developer Panopto is reporting that it has partnered with Automatic Sync Technologies to integrate closed captioning into its CourseCast lecture capture system. The solution was developed jointly on behalf of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which is using the system to capture, caption, and publish classroom presentations.

North Carolina State University and IBM have announced plans to provide every student in North Carolina access to educational resources through NC State's Virtual Computing Lab (VCL), an open source, Web-based technology. Through this cloud--which is a set of Internet-based resources--students at the university, as well as K-12 schools and other colleges around the state will have access to educational materials, software applications and computing and storage resources.
