The University of Ottawa has named Sylvain Chalut as its new chief information officer. Chalut, who was most recently director of Business Relations Management with Bombardier AƩronautique's information systems services, will provide "strategic leadership for IT across the university by ensuring business alignment, performance management and investment management."

A new service has been launched to help instructors in both higher education and K-12 institutions detect plagiarized work submitted by students. The service, DOC Cop, is an entirely Web-based tool that provides free and automated assistance in locating "source material" (ahem) used in assignments submitted to teachers.

Blackboard this week debuted a new tool called SafeAssign, which is designed to eliminate plagiarism in student assignments. The service detects plagiarized works in student papers and delivers reports on such incidents through the Blackboard Learning System.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison picked an insider as its next chief information officer after narrowing the field to three candidates. Ronald Kraemer will become CIO and vice provost for information technology, the university announced, stepping up from his role as deputy CIO and associate director of the Division of Information Technology.
