Adobe has now released Acrobat 9, announced earlier this month, along with an updated Creative Suite (version 3.3), which incorporates Acrobat 9 Pro software. The new version expands functionality for students in the areas of collaboration and the creation of electronic portfolios.

A huge increase in freshman enrollment numbers for the fall semester has Loyola University in New Orleans pleased with its efforts to rebuild its student body after Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS) is also looking at strong enrollment numbers, three years after the hurricane and its aftermath of flooding devastated New Orleans.

Novell announced Wednesday that it has joined Microsoft's Server Virtualization Validation Program. Novell's participation will allow customers to run Windows Server 2008 as a virtualized guest on top of Xen hypervisor in SUSE Linux Enterprise 10, with the ability to receive cooperative support from either company.

IT pros wanting to try out the latest Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization technology can now get the Release Candidate 1 (RC1) version via Windows Update. This optional version, which contains minor improvements, was first announced by Microsoft last month.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has deployed the Mirapoint Message Server from Mirapoint Software, supporting 65,000 student e-mail accounts. The university chose the system to augment the Microsoft Exchange platform currently used by faculty and staff.

Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and the University of Houston in Texas have both selected relationship management software from Azorus to help improve their yield rates, the numbers that show how many students accept a school's offer of admission and then how many actually register. Both universities will be using Azorus' Yield Management Program to communicate with accepted students in the last phase of the recruitment cycle.

Fresno Pacific University has selected Orion, the Intelliworks relationship management suite, to manage its marketing and outreach activity for the Office of Continuing Education. The school plans to use the solution, which is delivered as a service online, to collect inquiries from the Web, track communications with students, and conduct follow-up e-mail surveys.

Conducting disaster preparedness meetings among 14 Pennsylvania universities no longer requires hours or even days of travel time for university administrators. Instead, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) is using interactive collaboration software from Wimba to conduct some of its state-wide staff meetings and training sessions.

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) will be opening a new campus in Dubai as part of Dubai Silicon Oasis, a complex that will include a high-tech park, housing, retail, banks, and conference centers. At the announcement, Dubai representatives said their city will invest in building a full-fledged campus for "RIT Dubai," including an academic center, living quarters for students and faculty, and a recreational facility. RIT will provide academic content and manage the university.

Georgia Tech College of Management has selected Talisma CRM to manage its constituent communications. The college will use Talisma for communications across multiple channels, including e-mail, phone, personalized portal, and mail. The initial implementation will be deployed by three administrative departments: graduate programs, executive education programs and faculty recruiting.

Following on a business process management analysis across multiple school operations, Queens, NY-based St. John's University has decided to outsource its admissions application process to DataBank, a service provider that performs document scanning and management. The school was compelled to find an outside vendor after experiencing a 65 percent increase in admissions applications over a five-year period.

Microsoft's Live@edu, a suite of online tools focused specifically toward education, has now been expanded to include Exchange Labs, which is similar to a hosted Exchange service but with prototype features that are not yet available to the general public. The move brings expanded e-mail options to campus IT departments, including 10 GB of space per account, as free added features.

Harris Connect has launched a new alumni and student relations tool built on the Facebook Platform. Dubbed "Community Connections," the application is designed to provide secure connections between schools and their Facebook-using constituents and keep them engaged with news and other information.
