Microsoft is really serious about this Monday, June 30, being the end date for selling Windows XP licenses with new computers -- so serious that Senior Vice President Bill Veghte wrote a letter clarifying some of the details.

Google seems to have bested Microsoft in the land down under, according to various accounts of an Australian public school system e-mail contract deal. The deal, announced Tuesday, ousts an e-mail system based on Microsoft's products in favor of using Google's Gmail.

Three months after the initial release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1, Microsoft has issued what it calls a "reliability update" to sweep out any glitches that may pop up in a complex stack of applications on the new OS version.

Adobe has now released Acrobat 9, announced earlier this month, along with an updated Creative Suite (version 3.3), which incorporates Acrobat 9 Pro software. The new version expands functionality for students in the areas of collaboration and the creation of electronic portfolios.

Microsoft Tuesday issued a new security advisory after the discovery of "a recent escalation in a class of attacks" targeting Web sites. The exploits are associated with Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) and the ASP.NET 2.0 Framework, with SQL Server used as an entry vector for so-called SQL injection attacks.

Sybase announced that by the end of June its mobile device management suite will be enhanced with antivirus and firewall technology. These new security components will appear in the company's iAnywhere Afaria management and security software. Combined with Afaria's mobile device authentication and encryption technology, the enhanced software is intended to provide protection for Windows Mobile, Symbian, and Blackberry mobile devices from viruses, data compromise, hackers and the effects of mobile device loss or theft.

Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO has notified about 800 of its students that a former university employee recently was found in possession of computer data files containing their names and Social Security numbers.

Microsoft has released Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0, a file translator that allows users to open, edit, and convert Open XML files created in Office 2008 for Mac or Office 2007 for Windows for use in earlier versions of the suite, including Office 2004 11.4 and Office v. X 10.1.9 or later.

Tomorrow the Eclipse Foundation is sending its third annual "release train" chugging down the track. This year's synchronized launch of several Eclipse projects at once (code named "Ganymede") involved the coordinated release of 23 projects, up from 21 in last year's "Europa" release, and 10 in 2006 with the original "Callisto" release.

Pentaho, a maker of open business intelligence (BI) software, is moving away from the Mozilla Public License for its BI product. The company announced this month that Version 2 alpha, as well as subsequent versions of its Pentaho BI platform, will be released under the GNU GPL Version 2 license.

Microsoft on Thursday announced that it was reissuing a "critical" patch relating to Bluetooth wireless technology that was released last week as part of its June update cycle. The patch addresses how Bluetooth interoperates with Windows components and applications.

On the heels of Blackboard's latest court action, Desire2Learn this week posted a response describing some of the commercial LMS leader's comments last week as "contempt(ible)" themselves and nothing more than a cynical attempt to create "fear, uncertainty, [and] doubt" in the marketplace. Blackboard filed a motion last Tuesday for contempt on the grounds that Desire2Learn had not fulfilled its obligations under a court order resulting from a patent infringement suit.

On Thursday, Version 11.0 GM of the openSuSE Linux-based operating system was publicly released. The open source OS, sponsored by Novell, contains "200 new features," improved installation and packaging, plus a few options for the desktop user interface.

Sao Paulo University (UNESP) has chosen Sun Microsystems technology to power the largest computing cluster in Latin America, which will span across seven different sites in São Paulo State. The UNESP Computer Capacity Integration (GridUNESP) compute cluster will provide processing and data storage capacity for research in particle physics, genetics, meteorology, medicine, and other areas of scientific investigation.

Ohio State University in Columbus said it will be installing Smart Technologies products--including interactive whiteboards--in its Digital Union, a four-year-old leading-edge research and education facility. The Digital Union, a joint initiative between the Office of the CIO and the university libraries, offers a place for faculty and students to work with new education technology products in order to assess their potential for enhancing teaching and learning.

A new supercomputer installed at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN is being compared to a "fleet of thousands of bike messengers." Individually they don't carry much freight, but they use less energy and are more effective in some situations. At least, that's the hope. Gerry McCartney, vice president for IT and CIO at Purdue, said the supercomputer, a SiCortex 5832, uses one-fortieth the power of traditional supercomputers.

Sonic Foundry debuted a new version of its lecture capture platform Thursday at the InfoComm and EduComm conferences in Las Vegas. Mediasite 5.0 adds about 100 new or enhanced features for recording, playing back, and managing classroom recordings. The company also announced new hardware recorders for automated lecture capture, which are scheduled to ship next month.

This fall Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA and Discovery Education, which produces digital media-based learning, are launching a new online master's degree program in instructional media. The 30-credit instructional media program will prepare teachers to engage today's students in learning through digital media. Courses will focus on topics such as digital storytelling, using digital media in the classroom, using technology to support creativity and applying brain-based theories of how students process information to technology integration.

An Nvidia representative Wednesday confirmed the view that Intel is delaying release of the Universal Serial Bus 3.0 specification to chipmakers. That allegation against Intel first surfaced in a CNET News.com report by Brooke Crothers, citing an unnamed source.
