Intel is publicizing its new Centrino 2 processors, which are currently being integrated into laptop computers by about 250 equipment manufacturers. A number of Intel processor products based on Centrino 2 will be publicly unveiled "within 90 days," according an announcement issued Tuesday by Intel.

Most desktop computers today, when not in use, power down their hard drives to save energy. While this may be very green, it also incurs minor, though sometimes frustrating, delays. Waiting up to eight seconds for a hard drive to power back up to fetch some document is not the best use of any office worker's time. So two University of Arizona researchers have sussed out a way to save energy and keep data coming quickly, through a concept they call context-aware prefetching.

The Georgia Tech College of Computing said that sponsors for one of its research centers have renewed their support. The University of Exeter has chosen UK-based IT services firm Data Integration to undertake a major network upgrade.
