Moodle 1.9.1 Gets Performance Improvements, Minor Fixes

Moodle has released Moodle 1.9.1, the first maintenance update to the popular open-source learning management system since the 1.9 launch in March. The new version includes a number of minor fixes, as well as performance improvements and some new functionality.
According to Moodle, the new release addresses nearly 400 issues. It also improves performance in the areas of forums and backup/restore and adds captcha support for e-mail self registration. A small sampling of fixes in the new version includes:
- Gradebook issues, including performance;
- PostgreSQL compatibility fixes;
- Language pack issues;
- Improvements to participants list;
- Forum tracking and group modes; and
- Issues with PDF files in Internet Explorer.

Moodle, as of this writing, has more than 20.3 million users participating in nearly 1.9 million courses at 43,837 registered sites, according to Moodle's published statistics.

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Institute for Cyber Security (ICS) has launched a new Internet security incubator. The incubator was developed to commercialize promising technologies that address major cyber security and privacy issues. The first companies to enter the incubator are Denim Labs and SafeMashups.
- ISO/IEC Publishes Office Open XML Standard
ISO/IEC has published the Office Open XML (OOXML) file format standard, formally known as ISO/IEC 29500:2008. It describes file formats originally designed by Microsoft for its Office 2007 productivity suite, which are used in presentation, spreadsheet and word processing applications.
