Cornell Deploys Web-Based Data Viz Solution

Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, is deploying new data visualization and analysis tools for its Key Performance Indicators (KPI) initiative, a project that will be used to "assess the present state of business, measure performance and progress toward goals, and inform decisions on future courses of action," according to the university.For the project, Tableau Software is providing the Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server solutions, which will be used to analyze and share information between multiple colleges involved in the project. It will initially include 100 users but will be expanded over time to cover more than 1,000 across the university.
In a prepared statement released today, Cindy Sedlacek, technical lead for KPI, said, "Tableau Desktop’s ease of use and rich visualizations combined with Tableau Server’s ability to immediately publish those visualizations made it the all-around winning choice. “Tableau’s powerful analytics let us easily tell the story of what has previously happened and is currently happening in our business.” Sedlacek is also director of data administration and reporting for the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell.
Tableau Desktop links to data sources to provide visualizations of data relationships through a drag and drop interface. Tableau Server is a data viz solution that provides Web access and collaboration capabilities for data projects. Tableau said that, based on early successes with the use of its tools, other groups within Cornell are also now evaluating the software for their own projects.
Cornell University serves about 21,000 undergraduate and graduate students and employs more than 14,000 faculty and staff.
