Sun PASIG Unites Education and Industry for Digital Archiving

Sun Microsystems has formed a new collaborative group focused on developing and sharing best practices for digital archiving: Sun Preservation and Archiving Special Interest Group (Sun PASIG). The group brings together representatives from industry, education, government, and library services in an effort to preserve and archive research and cultural materials.Founding members of the Sun PASIG include the Alberta Library, the British Library, Johns Hopkins University, Oxford University, Stanford University, and the Texas Digital Library. Members will meet on a semi-annual basis to "share knowledge of storage technology trends, services-oriented architecture and software code, and discuss best practices of both commercial and community-developed solutions," according to the group. The will also be working groups focusing on various areas of digital archiving, ranging from architecture to security to policy.
"We are trying to meet the needs of the evolving 'cybrarian' community that is grappling with storage and data management, workflow, and high-level architecture trends in the area of preservation and archiving," said Art Pasquinelli, education market strategist for global education and research at Sun.
Said Stanford's Michael Keller, university librarian and director of academic information resources, "Libraries and universities around the world face a common problem: how to best capture and archive valuable knowledge. Global discussion is the first step towards finding solutions that meet institutions' individualized preservation needs. With the formation of Sun PASIG, we are looking forward to working with our peers to discover and create the best digital preservation options available, from infrastructure to interfaces."
The first event will be held Nov. 14 through 16 in Paris, France. More information on the group and registration for the event can be found below.
