Ex-UC Online Official Accused of Embezzlement

The former program director of a University of California office that manages online learning turned himself into police after a Santa Cruz County superior court judge issued a warrant for his arrest, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported. County prosecutor Bill Atkinson said Moises Torres resigned from UC College Prep initiative after stealing $200,000 from the 21-person program. The patterns of the embezzlement were identified in an audit.
Torres is suspected of padding contracts he made with an Arizona-based software vendor in exchange for a $200,000 payment in December. UC officials called it a "subcontracting scheme.”
